Issue Brief 22-07
May 20, 2022
Summary

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization Act of 2022 was signed into law as Division W of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2022. The bill reauthorizes several grant programs in the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for fiscal years (FYs) 2023-2027.

First enacted in 1994, VAWA programs provide funding to states, local governments, and others to address issues such as domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The most recent authorization expired in FY 2018, but VAWA programs have continued to be funded without an active authorization.

This brief provides a summary of the reauthorization, estimates formula allocations, and highlights provisions of interest to states.
