Issue Brief 21-16
October 6, 2021
Summary

UPDATE: The president signed the IIJA on November 15, 2021. The bill is unchanged from the version described in this brief.

The Senate has approved and sent to the House a five-year infrastructure bill, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA; H.R. 3684). The nearly 3,000-page bill reauthorizes surface transportation program and authorizes a wide range of programs related to transportation, drinking water and wastewater, broadband, energy, and more. The bill also provides appropriations for certain programs.

This brief summarizes funding in Division B of the bill, which authorizes programs for highway safety, motor carrier safety, rail, multimodal infrastructure, and more. It also covers advance appropriations provided in Division J for various agencies in the Department of Transportation (DOT).

NOTE: This brief was updated on October 14, 2021, to include a table covering Division J appropriations. The table was mistakenly omitted when thisĀ Issue Brief was initially published.
