Issue Brief 21-04
April 8, 2021
Summary

The final fiscal year (FY) 2020 appropriations bill included a two-year reauthorization of the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) Act, which provides revenue-sharing payments to states from timber sales on federal lands. The reauthorization was retroactive to FY 2019 and expired after FY 2020. Program payments are made with a one-year lag.

The Forest Service has announced payments to states for FY 2020. This Issue Brief provides background on SRS reauthorization issues and discusses FY 2020 payments.
