Three Years into the IIJA

/ 24-03

It has been three years since the president signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which appropriated nearly $1 trillion for infrastructure investments for fiscal years (FYs) 2022-2026. It was, first and foremost, a surface transportation reauthorization bill. It boosted funding for existing transportation programs and funded a host of new ones. It also served as a vehicle for hundreds of billions of dollars of investments outside the transportation sector, including broadband, water infrastructure, environmental cleanup, outdoor recreation, and cybersecurity. While the bulk of funding was for capital investments, it also supported areas such as research, safety, workforce training, and technical assistance.

This analysis provides an update on IIJA funding allocated to states, local governments, and other public entities as of November 1, 2024.
