FFIS OVERVIEW

The federal budget provides about 30% of state revenue, making it the single largest source of revenue in many states.

Federal Funds Information for States (FFIS)—founded by Vic Miller with support from the National Governors Association and the National Conference of State Legislatures—helps states manage federal funds by analyzing the impact of federal actions on states—be it sequestration, budget enactment, new legislative proposals, or potential government shutdowns.

FFIS PROVIDES WEEKLY UPDATES

  • Weekly News summarizes congressional actions, agency guidance, regulations, and other developments
  • Competitive Grant Updates aggregate recent postings of interest to states

FFIS MAINTAINS DATA PRODUCTS

  • An online Grants Database details state allocations for more than 200 federal grant programs
  • Regularly-updated spreadsheets track funding and implementation of the latest bills of interest, such as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

FFIS TRACKS THE FEDERAL BUDGET AND LEGISLATIVE PROCESSES

  • An Appropriations Tracker summarizes congressional recommendations
  • Budget Briefs and Issue Briefs describe congressional and executive actions and their impacts on states
  • The VIP Series provides 50-state estimates of the impact of the president’s budget and the enacted budget on selected grants

FFIS DOES EVEN MORE

  • Special Analyses report on other matters of interest, such as federal funding per capita
  • State Policy Reports offers semi-monthly insights into a variety of state fiscal issues
  • FFIS maintains resources to help states manage federal funds, such as how to establish a grants office, and an inventory of federal matching and maintenance-of-effort requirements
  • FFIS staff are available to answer questions via e-mail, phone, or virtual training sessions
