FY 2024 Minerals Payments Decline

/ 24-17

Many states receive a share of revenues from the production of oil, gas, minerals, and renewable energy on federal lands and from leases on those lands. The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced $4.29 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2024 payments to states, a -9% change from the prior year. The reduction in FY 2024 reverses the trend of annual increases in FYs 2021-2023. Still, payments in FY 2024 are 97% higher than in FY 2021. As in FYs 2022 and 2023, New Mexico received the greatest share of total payments (67%), followed by Wyoming (13.8%). Eighteen states received no payment.
