In December 2022, Congress authorized the use of federal funds to replace Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that had been stolen electronically. Initially covering benefits stolen during fiscal years (FYs) 2023 and 2024, the provision was subsequently extended to cover thefts occurring through December 20, 2024. It has not been extended further. While states continue to submit quarterly reports on the program, this brief presents and analyzes state data reported to date on stolen benefit claims and replacement. The frequency and amount of benefit theft reported and the share of claimed benefits replaced has varied significantly among states.
