The Department of Education (ED) recently announced six new interagency agreements (IAAs) with four departments to transfer programs and activities out of ED. The announcement follows an executive order from March directing the Secretary of Education to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities.” In July, ED signed its first IAA with the Department of Labor (DOL) allowing DOL to administer certain adult education and family literacy programs and career and technical education (CTE) programs. This Issue Brief summarizes ED’s announcements and lists the programs that will be handed off to a different agency.
