Fiscal year (FY) 2026 is the final year covered by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Surface transportation programs must be reauthorized before FY 2027 to receive new funding. Congress can either extend the IIJA (or portions thereof) or draft a new surface transportation reauthorization bill. It must also decide whether to continue hundreds of billions of dollars in supplemental infrastructure funding within and outside of the transportation sector.
This Special Analysis examines the IIJA’s role in overall grant funding in recent years to identify the sectors that could see the largest funding reductions after FY 2026. Future publications will take a closer look at the most important grant programs.
