Many states receive a share of revenues from the production of oil, gas, minerals, and renewable energy on federal lands inside their borders and from leases on those lands. The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced $4.07 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2025 payments to states, a -5% change from the prior year. This follows a -9% change between FY 2023 and FY 2024. While payments have declined from their FY 2023 peak, the FY 2025 payments are 87% higher than in FY 2021. As in recent years, New Mexico received the greatest share of total payments (68%), followed by Wyoming (13%). Sixteen states plus the District of Columbia received no payment.
